Q: Ugrading for compatibility  Getting NO WHERE

I have a MacPro Early 2008 I believe. Build number 10K549 OS 10.6.8  Trying to install a later version of OS X (Yosemite) and it keeps telling me I can not install on this computer.  WHY??
I updated my iPhone 5S iOS to 9.1 and NOW I can't SYNC my phone because it says I need a higher version of iTunes But the higher version of iTunes is NOT compatible with my OS on my MacPro... So that is why I'm trying to upgrade to a higher version of the OS X.  GERRRRRR

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You should try to verify that you have an Early 2008 model (and not just one sold in early 2008). Here's how to check that:

    Run the System Information application.

Click on the Hardware line to get the Hardware Overview (if it is not already visible).

The second line should start with "Model Identifier:" followed by a string like "MacPro3,1".

If the numbers at the end are indeed "3,1", then you have an "Early 2008" Mac Pro and should be able to install Yosemite (assuming nothing else is wrong).

If the numbers at the end are "1,1" or "2,1", then your Mac Pro officially cannot be upgraded to Yosemite; it is limited to Lion (Mac OS X 10.7).

You can sync a device running iOS 9 with iTunes 11.4, IF you have not applied the iOS upgrade through iTunes.  If you are not using 11.4, you can upgrade to that version and still sync your phone.

My iTunes is 11.4  but my computer does not recognize my phone anymore anymore.

It show a small window that says.........

The iPhone “iPhone 5s 32 gb” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

I cannot personally attest to this, but the Wikipedia article on iTunes version history says that Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" can support versions of iTunes as high as 12.2.2.25 (August 2015). but it also says that 12.3.0.44 (September 2015) is the version that introduced support for iOS 9.

Oh no,  I just purchase Lion awaiting the code for download.  But like I had mentioned before I have ALREADY updated my iPhone to iOS 9.1 and it can NOT be UNDONE (Uninstalled)   Well just gonna have to wait and see I guess.  I should have checked BEFORE I installed or read more carefully.  Thank you for all ur help Markwmsm  you have been very helpful.
