Q: why does iTunes need my billing info to get free games at app store?

I want to try a free app game but iTunes needs my credit card info or it won't allow me to get the game. What the heck...

    Here are the instructions for not having a credit card associated with your Apple ID:

    Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method - Apple Suppor…

    That's a really bad idea that she gave you because that method involves creating a new Apple ID. It doesn't work with an existing Apple ID, as it plainly states. You already have an Apple ID because you have an account here in the Apple Support Communities. If you follow those instructions you will end up with two Apple IDs and one day you will be back here wanting to know why Apple won't merge your Apple IDs. Apple won't, and that's another story for another time.

    The support article I provided a link to explains how to set up None for a new ID or for an existing ID. If you look at the link, the second paragraph is headed "If you already have an Apple ID". The section about how to create an Apple ID with None as the default is very clearly labeled "If you do not have an Apple ID".

    So, sorry, but following those instructions does not result in having two Apple IDs.

    You are most welcome david! And I do not think your brainpower is questionable at all. The way to do it is not exactly intuitive!

    To the contrary, it does not and has never explained "how to set up None...for an existing ID." It only provides instructions to get the None option by creating a new Apple ID.

    Directly from the link;

    If you already have an Apple ID

    If you've already created your Apple ID, you'll need to add a payment method when you first use it to sign in to the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. But you can optionally remove the payment method after you sign in to the store. You won't be asked for a payment method again until you make your first purchase.

    People who follow those instructions and input their bank card details thinking it will be temporary have reported here in this forum many times over that they are then unable to remove the bank card because the None option is still unavailable to them.
