How have I received iMessage text showing a map of the location of a contact?

My wife has just received a iMessage text showing a map of the location of one of her contacts, which is concerning as she has neither requested that contact to 'follow' her or given permission for that contact to let her know the whereabouts of their location. Am I correct in thinking that location of friends can only be activated if both parties acknowledge a notification form the other?

My wife and I are concerned as that particular contact is not a close friend. Therefore, I would like to know if this could be an unwanted attempt to locate my wife's location.

My wife has an iPhone 5 with the most current iOS running on it.

Kind regards

Hi, Glen.

Thank you for visiting apple Support Communities.

I understand that you have a concern regarding location sharing and the Find My iPhone application. Location sharing can be initiated a couple ways and this request has to be accepted for it to work for either party. Below you will find more information regarding these features and how to disable them.

Can anyone answer my first question about the Findmyfriends maps in text messages?

shows the location of one of our family members or says Trying to locate one of them.

Do you use Family Sharing?

Also, why, when there is so much GPS technology and you can find real time GPS trackers APP everywhere does Sprint Family Locator use cell towers to locate its members.

A question for Sprint don't you think?

I have the same question. I want to be able to locate my wife and daughter in case something terrible were to happen and I want them to always know where I am. My wife and daughter are concerned because after setting this up, on group text messages my wife sees a message on the bottom that shows the location of one of our family members or says Trying to locate one of them. Why does this happen and how can i prevent it from happening.

Also, why, when there is so much GPS technology and you can find real time GPS trackers APP everywhere does Sprint Family Locator use cell towers to locate its members. Its works terribly. What a waste of money.
