Q: Classilla downloads stopped working

I've used Classilla 9.2.3 successfully for years (on my OS 9.1 G3 iMac), and today suddenly it won't download pages (or images) to my hard drive. It displays pages fine, and gives me the "Save As" (or "Save Picture") dialogue box, but when I press "Save", no Download box appears, I've tried updating to Classilla 9.3.3, same problem. (Yes, I've tried restarting the computer.) Clicking "Download Manager" from the Tools menu does nothing. (Downloading still works fine on Netscape.)

Where has my Classilla Download Manager gone? What should I do?

iMac, Mac OS 9.1.x, Classilla

Do you have some idea of the file name you are downloading?  You can use the Finder's Find File (found in its File menu) to locate that file on your hard drive if the download might be complete.

(I'm sorry for not replying earlier)

Yes, of course I've given it a simple name in the dialogue box, and then checked for that file-name afterwards.

I repeat: my Download Manager file seems to have disappeared … is there some code I can enter to re-install it?

The first time after start-up that I click Tools – Download Manager from the Menu Bar, I hear a lot of whirring, as if the Finder is desperately searching everywhere for a file, without success (and the second and subsequent times, nothing happens at all).

(Incidentally, I've since updated to Classilla 9.3.3, and updated from OS 9.1 via OS 9.2.1 to OS 9.2.2, but none of that has helped – still no Download manager, and still no downloading of pages or of images under Classilla)

Go to the browser preferences to see where the download folder is.   That should help you find the folder itself where any downloads might be in the Finder.     Find File in the Finder's File menu can also help locate the file.

Note, if you are using Mac OS 9 in Classic (booted into Mac OS X), and are running Mac OS X 10.4 or later Find File's ability is limited by the strength of your Spotlight index and may miss the file in question.    The Desktop folder in Mac OS 9 under  Mac OS X is found at the root of the hard drive, and may be an invisible file that only Bresnick's Tinkertool can expose.    You may also be able to use one of the Find File tools at the end of this user tip to find your files:

My data has become inaccessible, and I don't have a backup!

What I can't find is the Classilla Download Manager, not the Download folder!

Is the Classilla Download Manager an inseparable part of some larger item, or is it in a file of its own? If so, does anyone know the name of that item or file, and which folder it should be in? And if so, does anyone know any code to re-create that file in that folder, in such a way that it actually works?

I suspect that the fault is with my senescent hard-drive, and that it has corrupted the file, or has corrupted its name.

(And no, I'm not using OS 9 in Classic mode, I'm using native OS 9, ie using my Mac OS Z1-9.2.2 system folder to start up – I could also start up from a Mac OS X 10.2.3 system folder, but I haven't used that for years)
