How to delete apps from the launchpad in mac.

Hey, my macintosh air, has a very confusing problem. There are multiple of the same apps in the launchpad, and they do not open. I perhaps think they are corrupt? These include the app 'youtube' and 'google search' and some of the copies have the word 'first user' as well. When they wiggle, an 'x' does not appear and I can't drag them into the trash. They could not be deleted either from spotlight search or applications. Please help.

Mac Basics: Launchpad is the fast way to find and open your apps - Apple Support

"Note: If there is no "X" icon, the app wasn't installed from the Mac App Store, or the app is included as part of OS X. Check the documentation that came with the app for more information."

I expect you will have to delete the others by going to the App folder or wherever they are stored directly.

Hello Ytfrihbevriubrbicehinjerc,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

I see you have multiple icons for Chrome apps in Launchpad and they can't be removed.

These apps may have been placed on your system after installing the Chrome browser or App Launcher.

If you want to remove them, try these steps:

  1. In the Finder menu, choose Go > Home
  2. In the Finder window that appears, choose Applications > Chrome Apps
  3. Drag the app icons to the trash and empty the trash to remove them from Launchpad.

Note: The folder I mentioned above is your user Applications folder, (~/Applications) which is separate from the OS X Applications folder (/Applications).

For more information on the Chrome App Launcher, see Add and open Chrome apps - Chrome Web Store Help.

Feel free to let us know if this took care of it for you.

Sincerely.

Okay this is a huge issue/bug!

I just bought my 2015 Macbook yesterday and I made the mistake of deleting an app from launchpad (dragging and dropping to trash) while it was still open/probably open in the background.

The app is gone from the Finder but the icon stays in the Launchpad. When I click the icon it says app is in the trash. So I emptied the trash. Then when you click it again, a translucent question mark will appear over it. From this point, I've tried the following but nothing worked:

- Hold app icon till x appears. Try deleting. No response.

- Hold alt/option till icons jiggle. x will appear. Try deleting. No response.

- Reinstall apps through app store. Try clicking icon again. Question mark will disappear and app will launch. Now try deleting from Finder > Applications instead. Right click and move to trash or drag and move to trash. Icons will still remain!! (seriously?!) Click them again, question mark will appear over them.

- Do any of the above, but restart after. Problem persists.

At this point I was pretty disappointed with Apple's inconsistency. I'm also pretty ****** off that there is no place in system preferences where I can see what programs/drivers I have installed..... so much care and thought has been put into OSX... but there's still nothing for this? Windows seems to be miles ahead. Disappointing.

Anyway someone suggested the following solutions:

- Use App Zapper http://www.appzapper.com/

- Use Launchpad Manager http://launchpadmanager.com/

The 2nd one worked for me to get rid of the annoying icons that remain. Hope this helps someone. Also hope Mac actually integrates these features into OSX....

I have posted this same solution on a different thread.
