I was just given a macbook air (early 2015) as an early birthday present. It has a 4gb ram but I would really like it to be a 8gb. I have already started using my macbook and don't want to lose anything that I've put on it and don't know what to do. Any ideas guys?

Since it's new, you can return it to Apple within 14 days for a full refund. Then, purchase one configured the way you want.
Be sure to follow Apple's return policy, which means all components, literature, packaging, etc.
That assumes it was purchased from Apple. If it was purchased from a reseller, they will have their own return policies.
No you cant upgrade. But trust me... I am using Macbook Air early 2013. It works flawless. 4GB ram is enough even if u want to play heavy games. I myself play DOTA 2 on my MacBook Air.. So dont worry.. It wont make you sad with it's performance. Have a nice day
RAM in the MacBook Air is soldered in place, and can not be changed/upgraded.
This is one down fall of apple products. Upgrading them is nearly impossible.
