Time Machine back up keeps failing - disk not recognised

I keep getting the message "Back up failed. There is not enough space on Untitled". All of a sudden my Time Machine external disk is not recognised the way it used to be with a green symbol but now with an orange symbol. When I open it, only one back up is shown, and it obviously isn't doing what it always does, namely deleting the oldest back up, except I can't see it.

Running El Capitan on a late 2013 iMac, with a 500GB WD external drive as back up.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Time Machine automatically deletes old snapshots to make room for new ones, but it won't delete the last previous snapshot of any disk.

Please open the Time Machine preference pane and click Options. Has the list of items excluded from backup changed? For example, you may have been excluding a secondary volume, and that exclusion may have been removed.

Are you storing any other data on the backup volume, or have you ever backed up another disk or computer to it that you no longer have? If the answer to both these questions in "no," then there isn't enough space on the volume for all the data you want to back up.

If you are storing other data, or if you have backups of a volume you no longer need, you should move or delete that data to make room for more. Alternatively, put the device aside and start a new backup on another storage device. When you're sure you'll no longer need the data on the first device, erase it and start over.

Thanks for your answer but the answer to both is "no". I only use this disk for Time Machine backups.I don't know why the icon on my desktop has changed from the usual free to an orange general icon, nor why the message says there is not enough space on "Untitled". My disk has always been recognised as "Time Machine"

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." It's trying to backup 215 GB of data on the startup volume, and you only have 133 GB of backup space available. If that seems like too much data to be backed up, see below.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

tmutil compare | open -ef

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

The command may take several minutes to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Don't post all the output; just read it yourself. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.

Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.

Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.

Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.

At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:

These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

Caution: Under some conditions, tmutil may falsely flag files as not having been backed up when in fact they have been. It can be confused by multi-linked files, or by files with a modification date earlier than the one in the snapshot. This will not be an issue for most users. If the results of the above procedure surprise you, inspect your snapshots directly.

Thanks for your continued help but I get that it's trying to back up too much data, but why isn't it deleting the oldest backup as it always has done for the years I've been using Time Machine? And why has the normal green icon changed to orange, and why is the disc now recognised as "untitled" rather rgan "Time Machine" ? That's what I don't get.

It is doing that. All snapshots have been deleted except the last one. As I wrote earlier, the last snapshot is never deleted.

Is that its name in the Finder?

The Time Machine icon appearance is a known issue (apparently a bug) in El Capitan. See for example the discussion about that in Finder refresh issues and Time Machine drive icon. This should be fixed in an El Capitan update but we do not know when it will be.

Your log entries show that the drive is being recognized as having the name "Time Machine." See for example this line:

The message you are getting identifying the drive's name as "Untitled" may also be a bug, but that is just a guess. As a test, open System Preferences > Time Machine. If it is, it is probably safe to assume the misidentified name in the message is a harmless bug & does not indicate that anything is wrong with the backup system.

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including the list of excluded items. The backups themselves won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, see below.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move the original (not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.

Restart the computer and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will falsely show that you have no backups. Don't worry; your backups haven't been touched.

Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select

Go ▹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Please start a new backup on another, larger, external drive. You need more than one backup to be safe anyway. When you're sure you'll no longer need the data on the old drive, erase it and start over. If it still causes problems, erase it again and take it to be recycled.
