my ipod nano is freakin out and i cant fix it!

ok every time i plug it into the computer to charge and upload, it freezes! i cant do anything else with it because there is no battery left at all in the ipod. it wont shut off, and it just freezes right away. itunes doesnt even say an ipod is plugged into the computer 2. pleaze help me!
