Q: Where is the "open tutorial" in idvd?

I've used iDVD to make projects in the past, but it doesn't work the way it used to.  Dragging photos from Photos into an iDVD project doesn't work.  Downloading the pdf version of iDVD tutorial tells me to open the application and click the link for Open Tutorial.  No such link in the splash screen, or any of the menus.  I have the latest version of iDVD (7.1.

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

A good guide to iDVD 7 can be found here:

    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/idvd_07_stone.html

Apple's tutorial on iDVD 07/08 is here:

    http://www.apple.com/support/idvd/

(But note that the PDF is no longer available, but the links in the left-hand column still work)

    Previewing before burning:

As for Photos, try moving the required photos to your desktop and importing into iDVD from there.

Klaus - thanks for the link to the guide to ver 7.  I've downloaded it and will review it.  The tutorial link only provides a series of links in some other language.  I've tried exporting photos to desktop and importing from there but that doesn't seem to work.  Appreciate your time.

Since iDVD has been "dead" for over 2 years now we have to find workarounds to use it with El Capitan.  As for adding photos to a project I've created a folder on my hard drive titled Folder for iDVD slideshows.

I opened iDVD, went to the Media/Photos pane and dragged the folder into it.

Now I export the photos I want to use in the iDVD project to that folder and have access to it as I did with the iPhoto Library.

Or, you can continue to use iPhoto.  iPhoto wasn't deleted from your hard drive.  It was just removed from the Dock and is still in the Applications folder. In order to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store you first must have some version of iPhoto 9.X on your hard drive. If you do try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.
