Q: can't load os x mavericks

I Just bought a used mac book pro, 15 inch screen. I am the second owner, when I saw pictures it was working perfectly,  when it was delivered, it looked the same when taken out of box. When i turned it on the screen popped up at it was the  the os x utilities box. I have tried the press and hold of the options key, loads up the same way, i have tried the press and hold command key with the R key, same thing. I have even followed the step for first air and erase walk threws for reinstalling and everything else threw the apple walk thews.

I was thinking of looking for a os x mavericks start up disk to load up on the computer then go that way. or even doing a download of it to my windows computer the moving over to the apple with a sd card.

when i do the reinstall, it finds the hard drive, and after i put my apple log id in. a window pops up saying " this item is temporarily unavailable. then says on the second line try again later

all help would be great.     thanks Nate

Find the serial number of your MBP:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204347

    Enter it here:

    https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

Post back the model year information.

    Ciao.

A 2010 MBP originally came with Snow Leopard (10.6) and you will need those installation disks.  If the seller of the MBP does not have them you will have to contact Apple Customer Service and purchase duplicates.

That will enable to install Snow leopard and create your own Apple ID which will be associated with your MBP.  Then you will have to run the Snow Leopard combo update which will bring the OSX to 10.6.8:

    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399?locale=en_US

That then will allow you to create an App store account and load the newer OSXs to your MBP.

    Ciao.

    A footnote to OGELTHORPE's comments.

Lion and Mountain Lion are available for purchase from the Apple Online store. Mavericks and Yosemite are no longer available for download, or purchase.

ok thanks for the reply guys, when i bought it  was running Mavericks. But the thing is i read some place last night about Mavericks not being in the system anymore, So i bought a mavericks os x on a usb stick thinking that is what it came with. If I do a fresh install of Mavericks will it effect anything or no. b/c i was just going to update to the newest ios anyway, but i need a working ios to even get started with.

i went threw and did the clearing of the system, when i turn on laptop on I get a black screen saying, NO BOOTABLE DEVICE-- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY.

    Now what?

I have outlined for you how to get the MBP operational.  There are legal issues involved here and the Terms of Use for these forums specifically state that all advice must be with such bounds.  I simply cannot comment on any actions that you wish to take that differ from what I have advised you.

    Ciao.

If you bought it on a USB stick, that is an illegal copy of the OS and there is no way to know if it is even a working copy that will boot. Since it wouldn't boot, it appears to be a bad copy. Use OGELTHORPE'S directions.

ok i am going to follow ogelthorpe's directions. If I down load it threw windows, then on to a sd card, will it work that way or no? and how would i install the on to the computer. I read some place that i had to put the usb/ sd card into the slot and turn on the computer, while holding down the options button then select the hard drive and it should load up and install.  Or is there something different i need to do.

You can't download OS software on a Windows computer because you don't have access to the App Store. As previously posted, contact Apple Support and have the serial number of your computer available. They will send you new original disks for a small fee.
