My Powerbook has about 60% of its 500 Gb storage space being used by "Other". How can I reduce "Other"?

Can you clarify your computer model? No PowerBook (discontinued in early 2006) cannot run a Mac OSX version that reports disk space use as "Other."
I see this is a stale thread but I have the same question. I have a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6. with 500 GB storage. Over 300 GB are shown as "other" and I'm close to running out of space. I've searched the web for how to tell if this is an indication of a problem or if I can somehow clear it out, but nothing I find seems directly applicable. I need to find more storage and prefer not to go to external device. So, is this a problem I can fix or do I just need to bite the bullet and get an external drive?
'Other" is everything that is not in a named category, Documents you made, email. OS X etc, be careful what you delete.
Csound1, thanks...that's my fear. I'm not going to delete anything if I don't know what it is...but I can't figure out how to look at it. First answer I need (and you may have provided it) is whether the "Other" category is a target for freeing up significant space. If not, so be it.
It's a catch-all category, (or really the absence of a category), you can delete unwanted items in it but be careful not to delete anything you do need. So look in your home folder for stuff you need and don't delete that.
About 60% of my 500 Gb storage space is being used by "Other" and I want to reduce what "Other" is using.
