Internet Accounts not responding on password for google accounts

When I try to add gmail accounts to Internet accounts I get prompted for a password. Once I enter the password the modal goes blank and I never get a response. I eventually have to cancel the request.

Checking the Console log I see the following

2015/11/15 9:14:51,752 PM com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[8862]: __56-[ACUIViewController persistVerifiedAccountWithActions:]_block_invoke_3:103 -- *** Failed: Error Domain=com.apple.accounts Code=13 "Unable to fetch existing credential due to error -67808 Requested By: 8862" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Unable to fetch existing credential due to error -67808 Requested By: 8862, NSUnderlyingError=0x7fa29a7bf4b0 {Error Domain=com.apple.accounts.keychain Code=-67808 "(null)"}}

and at times seemingly related message when I try to add to iCal

I was finally able to fix this after a few days of trial and error.

This was a fresh first-time installation (not upgrade) of El Capitan, all my iCloud and Keychain data was backups from Yosemite, everything else I reinstalled and reconfigured manually like I like to do from time to time.

I had no issue adding all my Internet Accounts, including Google but then when I deleted it and re-added it, it kept getting stuck at the very last step where you decide which Applications to share the account with. Clicking [ OK ] would show briefly the spinner and then nothing happened, forcing you to exit the dialog.

What I was able to finally figure out is that, somehow, my keychain passwords for Google got messed up. By deleting all of them allowed me to eventually be able to go past that last dialog step and add the account back.

1. Open Keychains

2. Select All Items

3. Search for "Google"

4. Delete all references of Kind "Application Password" and Calendars (if any)

User uploaded file

Once confirmed the deletion, try adding the Google account again and it should work.

Hope it helps, it's been a very frustrating issue.

I wish I could say this helped, but after deleting all of the google entries from the keychain, it still hangs on this screen after entering my password:

User uploaded file

Here's the sequence of events (which I've been through half a dozen times):

  1. add the google account, entering my email address and password
  2. select which services I want to use (I uncheck mail, but I want everything else)
  3. I get an alert in the corner asking me to turn it on, so I click to do so
  4. it automatically checks mail again, takes me back to System Preferences so I can uncheck it once more, then asks for my password
  5. after entering password, it hangs on the above empty window until I click cancel.

Same issue. I did notice when looking at my google settings that my recently used devices is corrupted somehow. The machine that it thinks is my laptop has the name of my wife's laptop. I believe that somehow Google is getting confused between the two systems and pulling the wrong oauth token to compare it to. If it's pulling my wife's, mine will never connect.

I was able to follow the cleanup (remove all OS X entries at google and clean the keychain, then reboot) and it worked for a couple of days. Then the problem came back.
