Attempting Apple TV RESTORE in iTunes via usb connection of ATV to MacBook.

"Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes"

I do.

I am trying this because I am prompted to update the software on the ATV when online.

Which fails every time , prompting me to "restore" the ATV software. That apparently doesn't exist?

Help.

It's an older ATV, but not first generation. It's model MD199LL/A, whatever generation that is.

I used to be able to find my hardware profiles at apple.com which might tell me.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

That did it for me. I powered the ATV with the USB cable alone and Voila! Another note: there are 2 types of micro USB cables that look identical .... one carries power AND data, the other just carries power. So be sure that the USB micro cable you're using is the power/data variety. It is a guarantee that this is a problem that some folks will run into.
