Q: Since the iOS update, resting calories are gone and calorie count is way off!

My calorie count used to be fairly accurate when resting calories were displayed. Now my calorie count is way low. I have bee wearing a Fitbit in conjunction with my Apple Watch because I didn't feel 100% confident with the Apple Watch alone. I have also worn my Polar HR monitor for three days just to see where each device stood as far as calorie count. Apple Watch, before the update, was very close to the Polar monitor (within 100 calories). Now it's WAY off.  I was just on the verge of doing away with the Fitbit altogether. What happened? Is this going to be fixed?

    Hello stihlrunning,

After reviewing your post, It sounds like the Apple watch could be more calibrated. I would recommend you read this article, it may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.

You are able to reset the calibration and recalibrate it to be more accurate.

But, how do you know the Fitbit calorie count is correct?

I am having a similar problem. My phone was mistakenly wiped Saturday night and upgraded to iOS 9.1. I did not have a backup so the phone was rebuilt and my Apple Watch was reset and re-paired to the phone. When using the elliptical workout in the workout app I am only registering 1/2 the calories that I used to. I usually do about 60 minutes and get calories burned in the high 600's to mid 700's depending on my speed etc. but now I barely break 400. Something just does not seem right. I am going to try to reset the watch again. Any other ideas?

I have tried recalibrating my watch and, to date, that has not helped! Unless Apple comes out with a fix for this, I don't think I will be relying on my Apple Watch for calorie count. For example:

Yesterday I did a 5.06 mile hill run and burned 550 calories according to my Polar HR monitor. Apple Watch had me burning 381 calories. Prior to the update, my watch was within 20 calories of my HR monitor during exercise (I always wear my HR monitor during cardio). For the entire day my watch gave me a total calorie burn of 1967. Absolutely cannot be correct! I have a BMR of 1305. That paired with my run is a minimum of 1855. So, my watch is basically saying I only burned another 112 calories during the entire rest of the day! No way! Granted, I no longer have a super physical job, but I take care of my 2 year old twins and run my retail store all day!

Apple really messed something up here!

I am going to wear my HR monitor around the clock again for a few days (again) and see what I actually burn over a 24 hour period. This will give me a good idea where my Apple Watch is standing now. But, I truly believe that Apple needs to address this issue in an update. A lot of people like myself bought the Apple Watch for its activity tracking!

Does the Polar count active calories or total calories?

    The Polar counts total calories.

Was the Apple Watch total, active or total calories?

If active calories, you are comparing different things.

I was comparing the total calories from the Polar and total from the Apple.
