Time machine stopped working after upgrading to el capitan
Never had an issue with Time Machine using my MacBook Pro to backup to an external hard drive through an Air Port Extreme until I upgraded to El Capitan.
Only the 802.11ac AirPort base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
