Q: Would all merchants that support Apple Pay automatically accept Amex?

I never quite get the role of Apple Pay in the transaction flow.

I initially assumed that Apple Pay takes on similar role as PayPal, where the merchants deal with PayPal and and Paypal deals with the users' credit cards.  That way, merchants only need to enable support PayPal and the users could pay with any credit card that Paypal supports (e.g. American Express)

From what I can read about Contactless payment, it is not the case.  E.g. The merchants' terminals may be displaying the Contactless payment symbol, but they could only process Amex contactless payment if they can accept Amex in the good old fashion chip-and-pin/signature way.

Now, what about the situation with Apple Pay?  I haven't found a merchant that accept contactless payment but explicitly said not accepting Amex to try it out myself yet...

Thanks!

    Hi

No - that is not necessarily the case (your question: would all merchants that support Apple Pay automatically accept Amex?)

For example, in the UK, McDonald's does accept contactless payments via American Express cards, but it does not currently support using American Express cards via Apple Pay.
