MBPro 2010 - os 10.6 gets stuck on blue screen when starting up (even in safe mode).

Today I tried rebooting my MBPro due to some printing issues. When I did, I got the apple; desktop is blue not usual desktop photo; but file folders there; no dock; loads wifi. Have rebooted 4x. Then tried startup in safe mode.....got to blue screen, and now seems stuck there.

Tried regular restart - have apple; black wheel, and then stuck in blue screen.

Thoughts?

I will try all answers given here. So far I can't get past the blue screen no matter if I hold the [shift] key; or [ctrl +R]; or [ctrl +PR] - always stuck on blue. My fear is that it's more than I can do, and needs a repair shop (here in Finland).

Luckily my last backup was only 5 days ago, and so hopefully loss was minimal.

Thanks to all for answering.

Try disconnecting all peripherals except mouse, KB and monitor and then booting if you have not done so already. Otherwise it sems yo have a hardware problem.
