need way to save info off phone other than recovery i am getting a can't update message but have to recover

If your iPhone is in recovery mode, the data is gone already.

If you have not done a backup of the device, and it is failing an update and is Recovery Mode, then the data is already lost. You would have to use the last backup that you have of the device. If you have not backed up in a while, now is not the time to backup. You should have done that before this problem occurred.
