Damaged USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter by USB Charger

I purchased what I thought was a USB hub from Amazon to use with my Macbook and USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter in order to connect multiple USB devices. I used a standard USB cable to connect the adapter to a port on the hub and plugged my devices into the hub... Nothing worked. After some investigation I realized that what I had purchased was a charger only and not a USB data hub. The problem is that I believe I've toasted my adapter now as I can no longer get a single device connected right to the adapter to work. Super drag if this is the case as I now need a new $79 Multiport Adapter. The USB devices faired fine as they still work on another computer.

Here's the USB charging station (wish they hadn't called it a hub) that I purchased :-(

For $79 I also wish that Apple had designed in a safeguard (assuming someone confirms my suspicion here).

Well that safeguard should come from the company that claims to design it for your machine. I would consult with the manufacturer of the device, as the link said it is supposed to be compatible with the machine, if not, I strongly recommend giving them a negative review on Amazon. Honestly, if they are worth their salt and 5 stars, they should offer you an adapter free that works.
