If you back up to iCloud or iTunes, nothing should be deleted from your iPad.  Should you have a need to restore from your iCloud or iTunes backup, your current downloaded movies won't be restored, but your purchase history would be restored allowing you to download the movies again (if within the 30 day viewing window). Here is an article explaining iCloud backup

Thank you. i am hoping I can re download the rental. It is within 30 days. How would I go about doing this? I do not see my rental purchase history of other devices. Can you possibly tell me how to restore my iPad mini and possibly re download the rental? I read conflicting info that you actually have to rent it again. C

You cannot download a rental made and downloaded on one device to another device.  You should be able to download again to the same device if you have restored from backup.  Open iTunes Store and look for Purchased.  You should see your movie there.  Click on it and it will say that you have already purchased this movie should give you the option to download again.
