ive just tried this and nothing has changed its only on my Mac and not my iphone or iPad. I've also just noticed that on my Mac most of the contacts appear twice but not all, I assume that this is the reason that the birthdays appear twice, do you know how to correct this?
thanks for taking the time to answer my original question

It is possible an account you added in the settings has "Calendars" enabled causing events to appear twice. Depending on the account you want to use, you may or may not want to disable Calendars.
Get help using iCloud Calendar - Apple Support
On your device, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
It will show what features are enabled beneath each account listed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Have a good one.
