Finder icon view

Hi chaps, In a finder window how do I change the number of icons across please, at the moment I'm viewing a window with 11 across, when I resize the window (because it almost fills the monitor) they stay as 11 across and I have to use a scroll bar .... how can I change this behaviour please ?

Hello, Roger.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you want to make adjustments to the Finder on your Mac. I am not sure if you are wanting to remove items from the Toolbar in Finder or you need to close open Finder Tabs. However, here are the two articles that cover both scenarios.

Customize the toolbar

Hide or show the toolbar: Choose View > Hide Toolbar, or View > Show Toolbar.

Hiding the toolbar also hides the sidebar, and moves the status bar from the bottom to the top of the window.

Resize the toolbar: If you see angle brackets User uploaded file at the right end of the toolbar, it means the window is too small to show all of the toolbar items. Enlarge the window or click the brackets to see the rest of the items.

Change what’s in the toolbar: Choose View > Customize Toolbar. You can drag items into and out of the toolbar, add a space between items, and choose whether to show text with the icons.

Rearrange the items in the toolbar: Hold down the Command key, then drag an item to a new location.

Add a file or app: Hold down the Command key, then drag the item to the Finder toolbar until a green plus sign (+) appears.

Remove an item: Hold down the Command key, then drag the item out of the toolbar.

OS X El Capitan: Customize the Finder toolbar and sidebar

OS X El Capitan: Open folders in new Finder tabs or windows

Cheers

You can't directly change the number of icons across in Finder icon view windows. However, you can set the window to automatically change the number across so they all fit across the width of the window when you resize the window.

It isn't obvious, but to do this, with the Finder window open & frontmost choose Show View Options from the View menu (or use command + J). In the window that pops up, make sure the "Arrange by" popup is set to "none" & the "Sort By" popup is not set to "Snap to Grid."

The key is to making this work is to make sure "Sort By" is not set to snap to a grid. That option won't even appear unless the Arrange By option is set to none, but after you do this you can change the Arrange by option to whatever you want.

Thanks RCR but that doesn't work (I think) ... here's a screen shot of my predicament:

The window has to be this wide because I cannot change the number of icons across, in this instance (though for some reason it changes randomly) there are 5.

Here's the popup with both set to none:

and here's the window resized, the number of icons hasn't changed as evidenced by the half icon on the right and the scroll bar ....

Many thanks for taking the time.

Roger
