Q: Why Does My MacBookPro Fail To Wake From Sleep?

I used to always shut down my mbp after a day of work. I got tired of it, so I just started closing my lid. The first day after closing my lid, the mbp seems to be fine when I re-open it. However, after like 2-3 days of doing this, when I re-open the mbp, it is just a black screen. No backlight, and the keyboard is not lit. This leads one to believe that maybe it shutdown. However, pressing the power button does nothing. The only thing I can do is press and hold the power button, forcing the mbp to restart. This doesn't appear to be a good approach, however, because the screen that displays after it restarts is some password reset screen. I then have to click on the apple icon and then do another restart, after which the mbp just shuts down (not restarts). I actually have to press the power button again to get it to start.

Something seems fishy about this process, and I have not changed any default sleep/hibernate/restart settings. I thought macs were so awesome because they just worked. I'm starting to experience little annoying quirks, similar to the ones that make pc with windows so irritating to work with.

    Hello BillyBautistaJr,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that your Mac is not waking from sleep when you open the lid.  In order to help get this issue resolved I suggest that you run through the troubleshooting steps outlined below.

If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

    • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
    • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
    • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
    • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off.

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

    • Reset the SMC.
    • Reset NVRAM.
    • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
    • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
    • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account

    Take care.
