how to erase iphone 5 after I deactivated from my account

I deactivared my old iphone and now I have decided to sell it, so I need to wipe/erase it. Can this be done after I deactivated it from my itunes account?

iPhone 5, iOS 8.4.1

after typing in my apple password I get an error "verification failed- There was an error connection to iCloud". I think I get this because I deactivated the phone from my iTunes account. I can't erase it without connected to icloud first
