Q: How do I use migration assistant to migrate from a powermac G5 OSX 10.5.8 to a Mac Pro G5 OSX 10.9.5?

I am trying to transfer my data from a Powermac G5 running OSX 10.5.8 to a Mac Pro G5 running OSX 10.9.5.  I connected the two computers via firewire and received the message on my newer computer that the transfer could not be made and that I needed to upgrade the OS on my older mac.  My older mac cannot run any OS higher than Leopard 10.5.  Is there any way to work around this?

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), dual 2.3 GHz, 6.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM

    Migrate your data manually.

Possibly, but the newer one may not recognise where certain filles are on thge olser OSX.

With them connect by FW, boot the G5 up holding the t key, one a big floating FW sybol shows up on the G5, the Mac Pro will see the G5 as a FW drive, (the first Drive only though), then Migration assistant may work by choosing from another drive.

I actually tried that first and got a message on the Intel G5 that I need to open migration assistant on the older G5 powermac.  How can I open MA and use Target mode at the same time?  I don't think you can.  Probably will have to migrate it manually using the T key approach.  I've also read that you should not migrate the apps but should install the newest version, as the old apps are not compatible.  Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, you can't do both... did they remove the option from Migration assist to Migrate from another drive or backup?

    Oh wait...

    Use Migration Assistant

    On your old Mac:

    On your new Mac:

    1. Open Migration Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.

    2. Click Continue.
    3. When asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
    4. Click Continue.

As I said earlier, when I booted the old mac holding the T key it told me to open MA on my old G5.  Well, I tried it again and this time it worked.  MA let me migrate my old hard drive to the new mac.  The only thing I did not like is that it did not ask me what I wanted to migrate with check boxes (apps, docs, etc.).  It just started migrating the whole HD.  I hope this doesn't screw up my new fast G5 by putting the old apps on there.  Hopefully I can delete them and the mac will still run fast. (my old G5 is as slow as Christmas).

    OK, good to hear.

By the way, the new one isn't called a G5, it's a Mac Pro... to avoid confusion in the future.
