"This account already exists" error when trying to re-add a mail account

I have had trouble receiving email on one of my accounts. I have deleted the account in System Preferences and have attempted to add it again. I now get an error "This account already exists." I cannot see it in the list of Internet Accounts and it has been removed from my Apple Mail. Any ideas what might be the cause, please?

HA! This post helped me with a different issue. One email account was active but the second wasn't. Error message: "Only one mail account can be enabled on this Mac." I've always had two, but had transferred data yesterday to a new macbook and suddenly this appeared on my desktop. After trying for hours, I saw this post, read down and saw Jim Ward's post about Google. BINGO! Deleted Google and got both mail accounts back! Thank you all!
