Using external ZIF HD with ipod HD?

I thought I'd be able to use one of these external units

to access a couple ipod video (5th gen.) hard drives, to be sure the HDs are ok, and to possibly remove music from the HDs to my computer. Unfortunately though the computer recognizes the hard drive--and tells me how many GBs have been used/are available--I can't get it to show me any of the music. All I see are 3 folders (?)--Contacts, Calendar, and Notes.

I purchased the same (?) unit from a different vendor, and it didn't work at all, so I'm not sure if these are just really lousy/cheap or if I need to do something different to find the music files.

Should this work?

Thanks.

Have you enabled hidden and system files? See http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/P1/ for some background.
