iPhoto crashes after opening repeatedly

Hello -

Tonight my iPhoto opened, then crashed almost immediately. I have done a database rebuild, but it continues to crash shortly after opening. Using iPhoto 9.4.3 on OSX 10.8.5... thanks for any help.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

As I said already:

You may choose to upgrade or not, that's your business. I'm not arguing with that. What I am saying is that Apple's answer is 'upgrade' and sending crash reports for discontinued apps running discontinued OSes is pointless. When was the last update to 10.8? Since then we’ve had 10.9, 10.10, 10.11. Do you really think they're going to update 10.8 now? For a minor glitch on a discontinued app, where there are free solutions existing? I wouldn't hold my breath...

Thank you SO much Huxly647- I was about to go crazy trying to resolve this issue of repeatedly crashing iphoto 🙂 I am back in and iPhoto is functioning normally now after using your fix suggested "deleting googlemap.html and googlesearch.html in the applications"!

I have a huge project coming up and was stressed- You have no idea how relived I am! Peace and Happy New Year!

Have a late 2009 iMac. I re-downloadeed iPhoto from the App store this AM so it's 9.6.1. Tried to switch to the iPhoto library I have on my external and it 'allowed' it, but I don't see the images. (I've used this external for some time so it can't be the problem. Even though I can't see the images, the update time/date of the iPhoto library on the external continues to update.

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Regards

TD

I've tried the rebuild and repair and all that happens is it gets to a certain amount of images and then it stops and it continues to spin.

My library is quite large (more than 200 GB) If I use photo manager and it creates a new library but leaves the other untouched, that will mean I need 400 GB space, correct?

When I tried to get iPhoto to access the iPhoto library on my external hard drive, it gave me a message "iPhoto has detected inconsistencies in your library. Please click Repair to avoid any potential problems". So I then clicked "Repair" and after a couple of minutes, it showed "Repairing Library 100% complete" but it continued to just spin and the photos/events, etc. did not open. Given the large size of my library, should it take a while for it to open after it has been repaired?
