i have lots of pdfs in my iBooks library; i want to merge several into one document, one new pdf.

You can't do it directly in the iBooks app. You could try searching your country's app store to see if there are any apps that have that functionality, though you may not be able to get the PDFs to a different app directly on your iPad (not all PDFs allow you to email them to yourself so that you can use 'open in' in the Mail app to open them in a different app), you are probably better off doing it via your computer and syncing the merged PDF to your iPad.

At the same time it's a wake up call, not to store my pdfs in iBooks - 'çause it takes an awful long time to email everything to yourself (no other option) and take it from there .... 😐
You should be able to copy them over to your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases (that should copy PDFs and/or epubs in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks), and if using a Mac with iBooks on it then do File > Move Books From iTunes in that
