How do I sync sent Hotmail messages across all devices?

iMac 10.10.5

MacBook Air 10.11.1

iPad Air 9.1

iPhone 4 9.1

I went through some of the previous threads about syncing emails but at some point the iOS or OSX menu mentioned always seemed different from mine so I decided to open a new thread.

It is a pain in the proverbial when I try to find a sent Hotmail message. I have to check separately on the OSX machines and the iOS devices unless I remember where I sent it from. I can only assume that during the setup process of the iCloud or/and the mail accounts I must have made a mistake and would appreciate any help, if possible step-by-step, what the respective settings have to be.

To have your mail sync'd across devices you need to use either the imap or Microsoft exchange mail protocol. You should see these protocol options when you set up your email account. Don't know about hotmail.
