Missing photos after import from SD card

While importing photos using a card reader from my SD card to my computer - I clicked delete photos after import as always and hit import. The message automatically popped up that I did not have enough space in my photos library to import the photos. I went thru and cleaned out my library as much as I could. Went to plug the card reader with the card in it back in and all photos that I had been trying to import are gone from the card. My "last import" folder is empty in photos and I cannot find the photos anywhere. PLEASE HELP - I am an amateur photographer by trade and this is how I make my living! I need these photos!

Backup - Make a copy

And of course if you do not always have a good current backup then you are 100% guaranteed to lose all of your photos and other files sooner or later - TimeMachine is a good start - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

And as to media recover the free trial will tell you what can be recovered - you have to purchase to actually recover - and the cost is what it is, there are others possibly even free ones but Media Recover is a good tested one - only you can determine what the value of your lost photos is

And if you use a better workflow then you will not ever have this problem again - mark the price up to not doing things in a smart way

I agree with Larry about the workflow. I prefer to copy the photos from the memory card to a folder on the Desktop to assure they are safely on the hard drive before I do anything deletions. Once they are safely on the drive I put the card back in the camera and reformat it with the camera. Safer and more secure as it can clear out any "errors" on the drive that might pop up.

After the photos are imported from the Desktop to the library and confirmed that they are safely in the library they can be deleted from the Desktop. If you care about your photos you'll need to use the photographer's equivalent of a carpenter's primary rule: measure twice, cut once.

The easiest method to backup is to connect a EHD to your computer and use Time Machine. The EHD should be 1.5 - 2x the size of your computer's internal storage. Working any computer without a backup solution is shortsighted and will eventually cause problems. EHDs are inexpensive and Time Machine is integrated into OS X. If you are not familiar with TM then please click Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

In addition, you should consider moving your large libraries (Photos, music & movies) to a second EHD. This is easy to do and will save HD space on the internal HD on your computer. If you would like to pursue this, then please ask for help and someone can help you out.

You need to modify your work flow if you care about your photos - you have several bad practices and will lose photos

You can try to backup your Photos library and then launch Photos while holding down the option and command keys and repairing your database but it is unlikely that that will sork since your photos probably sere never saved to disk (impossible is the disk is full)

for now probably the only solution will be to purchase recovery software like Media Recover from FreshCrop

and your first priority is to make space on your mac - you must always have a minimum of 10GB of free space on your Mac and more is better - letting it run out of space can cause many disasters including damaging the software to the point that you can not even boot up to try to fix things - fix this now

And in the future never delete after import - always import, verify the import is good and after at least one successful backup cycle has completed then use yrou camera's format command to erase and format your memory card - I suggest rotating between two or more cards so you have time for good backups to occure without affecting yrou photo shooting

and of course you always need good, current backups

Can you explain more about backing up my Photos library?

Is it for certain if I purchase the Media Recover you suggested that I will be able to get these photos back? I am not spending $50 just to not get them back.

I have made lots of space now - It never happens but I just happened to have 4 shoots in the past 4 days that were on my photos at the time.

Thanks.
