MBP Overheating and Crashing on El Capitan Update

After updating to El Capitan, my macbook pro (mid 2010) has had nothing but problems.

My computer has been overheating and crashing/rebooting a numerous amount of times since updating, under the same conditions as Yosemite.

Yesterday the computer crashed and would not reboot. It would load to 3/4 of the gray status bar and go black. I had to use internet recovery to erase and re-install El Capitan. Luckily I keep backups with time machine.

After reinstalling, the computer still overheats and crashes. The bottom left of the computer heats up all the time regardless of proper ventilation. Sitting flat on a desk will cause the computer to run extremely hot, even when I'm only surfing the web.

I've tried resetting the NVRAM but that didn't help.

This needs to be fixed.

Reset SMC. Choose the method for “On Mac notebooks with non-removable battery”.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Start up in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760

If this doesn’t help, please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open, select”Open” in the dialog to run it.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste it when you reply.

I tried resetting SMC and Safe Mode, but after 15-20 minutes of use, CPU and GPU temps went up to 130+ and my computer froze and shut down.

I'm having the exact same problem. I upgraded to El Capitan and problems started immediately.

It started when I realized it was extremely hot in my bag, then it wouldn't shut down or boot up again, no response, just a black screen. Had to wait for a couple of hours to cool down and then it was able to boot up again but not for too long.

It's been two days since, so early to make conclusions, but installed smc Fan Control and it really helped.

My MBP is 2012, warranty expired, so i'll go ahead and open it to see if the fans are blocked or dirty. I'll update on how this develops. If you find anything that helps please share! good luck

I am using OS X El Capitan with the latest update pack and saw a lot of this overheating and high CPU % usage wth my Macbook Pro 13" early 2011 (16GB RAM, 250GB SSD + 500GB Fusion Drive). I use SMC FAN CONTROL and tried other techniques described in the forums. What solve my problem? I created another user, copied all my data from the old user to the new one, change permissions and ownership accordingly and everything is smooth as ever. Go figure! 🙂

Hope this helps you guys! Cheers.

Dec 16, 2015 12:25 PM in response to Drizziie

Not sure if this will help your case Drizziie, but wanted to update on my case for everyone else experiencing similar issues.

Installing SMC Fan Control helped but did not solve the problem. I came across this article https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/ , so that's when I started suspecting it was a video card issue. I ran a hardware test but did not find any trouble. Finally decided to take it to the genius bar and after 5 minutes they found out that the problem was actually the video card as I suspected. They have a turbo hardware test that's only available in their private Genius Bar network. Long story short, they replaced my motherboard for free, even though my guarantee expired 2 years ago.

What troubles me is how hidden the replacement program is. If I don't come across that article I would have end up spending a lot of money when the problem was on Apple's end [sigh].

Anyhow, now I have my computer back, so might worth a try taking it to Apple Store for a check.

Cheers.

Hey I got an MBP mid 2010

Got the same probs.... I really think, no Im sure....

THIS IS APPLE MADE?!? 😮

Because.....

(This is just my Opinion!)

They want to sort out the (good) old Mac books?

I installed back to Mavericks and the problem was gone... Fan speed is increasing smoothly...

Then again an fresh new install of El Capitan and here we go again Mac Book is Overheating and shutting off...only updates...

(before i even installed any Programm)

Im very afraid that the next heat shut down is the last one....

EL Capitan.... after 2 heat shutdowns

I used I Stat Pro so i could see that the Fan is not increasing speed till 90° C W*F??? (sensor is +-15° to real Temp just u know)

I Stat Pro even cant control the fan anymore... so I recommend to download MAC FAN CONTROLS or any other still woking fan Controller.....

But still u are not save for overheating...

Watch out for them nice Apple updates when the MBP is shutting down and updating (so any software u installed to control the fans is shut off)

I recommend to do updates only controlled in an cold environment..

I put mine close to the opened window 😉 and stack it on half Tennisballs.

Like i said just my Opinion but nothing else make sense to me....

So Apple pls don´t kill my MBP just of the cause of making more Money?

Peace & Out!

Mar 27, 2016 8:07 PM in response to SanjeRaj

You should be able to set the parameters in Istat Pro to turn the fan on and off at whatever temp you want. If the fan is not working correctly do a SMC reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 High temps can happen from runaway processes. To check that out open the utilities folder activity monitor and check for something using up CPU or Memory.

Mar 28, 2016 9:26 AM in response to my ginger

User uploaded fileSMC Reset was the first thing I've done...

Like i said fresh system... No Migraton nothing...

but OK i did an SMC Reset again by pushing dem buttons and putting loose the Battery..... Same Problem!!!

Think before u tell me again something that I already knew...

It is the way it is!!!

With no 3 party FAN control my MBP would be already DEAD for sure!
