Hello there, Jiggy.
It sounds like you want to change the application that launches when opening zipped files on your Mac. The following Knowledge Base article offers up the steps on how to accomplish that in Yosemite:
OS X Yosemite: Choose an app to open a file
You can select which app you use to open a file. This is useful if you prefer to use a certain app, or if you don’t have the app that was used to create the file.
Do one of the following:
Drag the file onto the app icon in the Finder or the Dock.
Select the document in the Finder, then choose File > Open With.
Control-click the document, then choose Open With.
Open the app, then choose File > Open.
-
In the Finder, select the document, then choose File > Get Info.
You can also Control-click the document, then choose Get Info.
-
In the Info window, click the disclosure triangle next to “Open with.”
-
Click the pop-up menu, then choose the app.
To open all documents of this file type with this app, click Change All.
If you can’t open a file with a specific app, the file may be damaged or may not be recognized by that app. Try opening it with a different app.
Alternatively, if all you need to do is change the icon for the file itself, this article should help:
OS X Yosemite: Create custom icons for files or folders
You can create a custom icon for any file or folder using your own pictures, icons downloaded from the web, or the icon from another file or folder.
-
Copy the picture you want to use to the Clipboard.
One way to do this is to open the picture in Preview, choose Edit > Select All, then choose Edit > Copy.
-
Select the file or folder whose icon you want to replace, then choose File > Get Info.
-
At the top of the Info window, click the picture of the icon, then choose Edit > Paste.
-
Select the file or folder whose icon you want to use, then choose File > Get Info.
-
At the top of the Info window, click the icon, then choose Edit > Copy.
-
Select the other file or or folder, then choose File > Get Info.
-
Click the icon, then choose Edit > Paste.
-
Select the file or folder, then choose File > Get Info.
-
At the top of the Info window, select the custom icon, then choose Edit > Cut.
