Backup from one iPod to another (music)

A few months ago my iPod had been stolen and recently my sister got a new and gave me her old one. I wanted to use my backup to put all my old music on it but when I tried all it would say is this iPod has not been backed up and the restore backup button is grayed out . Is there not a way to use an old backup on a new iPod?
