How to switch from SMS to iMessage and vice-versa?

I'm having a problem with my phone right now. I want to know if I could switch from sending SMS to iMessage with another person without having to delete the whole conversation thread. Also, the same with choosing to send an SMS after having an iMessage conversation. I can't seem to find a solution to my problem in the internet. I wish there is an option whenever I want to send an SMS or an iMessage to another contact who is also using an iPhone.

iPhone 5, iOS 9.1

When you have iMessage enabled, your iPhone will always try to send iMessages to other Apple devices,

If you want your phone to send your message via a text message automatically when iMessage is not available, you can enable 'send as sms' in your settings. (Settings -> messages -> Send as sms)

If you want to decide that yourself, you can tap the blue balloon twice to get several options like copy and paste. There will also be an option that says 'send as text message', that will turn the blue into green and send your message as a text. (you can also hold your finger on the message until you get the options instead of tapping twice)

If however you don't like iMessage, just disable it in your settings 🙂
