Can’t move items to trash because one or more required items can’t be found. Error 43

I’m no longer able to move items to the trash. I get an Error 43 message with the following: because one or more required items can’t be found. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to remedy?

iMac (24-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.

If you don't already have a current backup, you must back up your data before you take the above step.
