Magic Move not working in Keynote 6.6.1 and OS X 10.11.1

Hello all Keynote experts.

Since updating to El Capitan and later denote version I realized that the magic Move transition isn't working anymore, how strange! I can select the different settings in the Magic Move panel, I can also preview the animation, but when I go in presenter mode Keynote gets stuck with a red bar on top of the second monitor. From there I cannot even navigate to another slide, the only option is to get out of the presenter mode.

I just tested this file on another Mac with OS X 10.10.4 and Keynote 6.6 and Magic Move is working fine there.

What am I missing? Any suggestions how to fix that on my Mac are most welcome! 🙂

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), 500GB SSD & 750GB HDD

sequence of things to try:

1 - to try to get the specific presentation to play, delete the slides using magic move and recreate the effect with two new slides

2 - delete the two slides of the magic move, then select then drag the remaining slides into the navigator bar of a new presentation

3 - if option 1 and 2 does not work: try resetting Keynote; perform all the steps in the order listed:

  1. Remove Keynote version 6.5, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work: Appcleaner is free,
  2. Empty the trash
  3. Shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
  4. Wait 10 seconds, then press the power button
  5. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key,
release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen
start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
  6. Restart the Mac normally, (don’t hold down any keys during startup)
  7. Install Keynote from the Mac App Store

Thank you for your help Gary. I followed your suggestions and here are the results:

In short, nothing has changed, Magic Move is still not working.

In detail:

  • I had already tried without success the first set of your suggestions
  • So I moved on to remove Keynote, which sent me down a several-hour long rabbit hole:
    • In the process of deleting Keynote using AppDelete I lost all my custom templates – not a big deal, just a nuicance
    • I gained about 3GB of HD space. 🙂
    • On safe reboot I got a kernel panic, I tried twice no idea what happened and had to force quit each time
    • So I booted into recovery mode and reinstalled El Capitan, which took a while to download and install
  • Then finally I was back in business and downloaded Keynote again
  • I created a short 2-slide file and on first attempt I did not find the Magic Move animation.
    • Luckily it appeared by itself about a minute later. Strange.
    • Now it got exciting, I hit view slideshow and – bummer – the same problem was back! See the attached screenshots.

Gary, do we have the same system specs (see mine in the subject line of this thread)? Does Magic Move work on your Mac?

Also, I seem to remember when re-downloading Keynote, that it's now backwards compatible. I just tried my test file using v5.3, but it would not open

In addition, the strange bug that others are also reporting here is still around where files open off screen and I have to hit CTRL+Opt+CMD+Z to bring the window into focus.

All in all, a very disappointing experience for me, considering Keynote is an Apple app and previous versions worked just fine for me.

I hope you have some additional ideas, frankly I'm at my wits' end.

This is a major system error, hopefully it has been cleaned out with the re-installing the OS

No, I use Yosemite. I have tested El Capitan and found it unreliable for Keynote, Adobe apps and sound editing.

Most El Capitan users appear to be having no problem, but professional users are reporting an unacceptable level of.

I will not be upgrading to El Capitan anytime soon.

I just tried my test file using v5.3, but it would not open

Keynote 5.3 is unable to open series 6 filetypes, they are incompatible, just as Keynote version 4 can't open version 5 filetypes.

the effect looks like "dissolve", don't remember if that was always that way.

The visual effect is dependant on the content on the slide, size and position.

I hope you have some additional ideas

I rely on Keynote as an essential part of my business. Keynote did not perform properly in El Capitan on my test machine, so I replaced it with the previous Mac OS version which was Yosemite. I currently have no problems at all with Keynote.

Thanks for staying with me on this Gary Yes, I'm aware that Keynote works fine in Yosemite, what a bummer that the Apple folks can't make their own apps compatible with El Capitan before releasing it. This also means no Magic Move for me until this gets fixed by Apple as I'm not able to revert to Yosemite once El Capitan is installed, right?

Like you, I also rely daily and heavily on Adobe apps and Keynote, and while I have this issue with Keynote, Adobe CC 2015 apps are working fine for me.

Reinstalling the OS has not resolved the kernel panic. I'm fairly knowledgable about Macs but as a creative director I'm not experienced enough to understand the cryptic text that appears during a panic. I post it here as a photo I took, maybe you can make sense of it?

I'm not able to revert to Yosemite once El Capitan is installed, right?

You can down load Yosemite again from the Mac App Store, as you have installed it before, ensure you sign in using the Apple ID you used to install Yosemite originally. If you do decide on re-installing Yosemite, perform a clean install (erase the system drive of all existing data and repartition)

Im with you, Im a designer not a software expert. If you download Etrecheck it will list any prominent software or hardware issues. The website explains its use. Have a look at the report and see if there are any obvious errors.

You can copy and paste the report here, the data is anonymous, I can have a look and compare it against known problems.

Nov 23, 2015 10:01 AM in response to Gary Scotland

Wow, thanks, I just ran EtreCheck and there seems to be a lot out of balance in this system. Some entries seem to point to leftovers from old apps that have been removed since. What to do with the rest of the red flags is beyond my pay grade. 🙂

Please see below the report. Thanks for helping.

Turns out the culprit is my second monitor, a USB driven 16" AOC monitor that uses a DisplayLink driver, found here. Everything works fine if I disconnect this monitor. I'm currently working with the iWorks team at Apple if there is a way to work around this DisplayLink bug. Now that I know what's causing this problem, I can implement Magic Move transitions and know they'll be working fine in presentation mode as long as my USB monitor is disconnected.
