How to I enable the typing indicator (3 dots) in iMessage. For some reason its gone.

I have noticed the last few days, that when I am in the middle of a text conversation with someone who also is using an iPhone, I cannot see those 3 dots to indicate they are responding. But the response still comes. Why am I not seeing the dots? Now I can;t tell if the other person is responding or not during a conversation.
To be honest, I've never paid that much attention to it being there. It only happened one time that I noticed it was not there, and after a reset, it came back and all has been fine. I've read there have been a few issues with iMessage today, and I don't know if that would affect it. I figure if someone is going to respond to me, then I will get it when they respond. Go ahead and make an appointment and have it looked at. If there is something significant, go ahead and come back and post about it.
Thank you for your suggestions. I have tried all that already and it's still not working. I think my next step is to drop by the Apple store to see if they know what happened. It's annoying because I text throughout the day for work (most of them with other iPhone users), and now I cannot tell if they are responding right away during our conversations. Not sure exactly what you are thinking, but those only display when in an iMessage, and then only with one other user, and only when the other user has opened your message and is actively typing a reply. It does not show for group messages, and does not show in SMS messages, or messages with other non-iOS devices.
There is no setting to turn this off/on. As I said, it is only for single person conversations. You can try powering your phone off/on and see if that helps. The next step in User troubleshooting would be a reset. That does not affect any of your data. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. Test after that.
