how do you get the apple pen to work?
If using an iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil works with the Notes app in the drawing/sketch portion of the app by tapping on the squggly line at lower right hand corner within the app.
The Apple Pencil is not yet able to work with any of Apple's iWork Apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote ).
Have you charged the Apple Pencil yet? Are you using an iPad Pro?

The Apple Pencil ONLY WORKS with the new iPad Pro.
It will not work with any other iDevice.
Pencil and ipad pro are linked via Bluetooth
but the pencil does not do anything on the ipad pro. What is the next step?
What app/s are you trying to use the Pencil with?
Some Apple Pencil compatible apps may require you to pair the Pencil with the App within the App/s own settings found somewhere once you tap and launch the app.
Also,
Make sure the tip of the Pencil is screwed on all the way.
