how do i split a four track file into separate individual files.

i edited a film on FCPX and exported the FCP.XML to LogicX. when i open it the dialog is not split correctly. how do i split a four track file into separate individual files. i have dialog from a set. 3 neck mics and a boom. all recorded as four channel mono. but i cant choose between them in logic. when i try and export interleaved to split, i still get one file. i think the assigning of roles (dialog, sound effects, etc..) also affects the XML.

Although you can pick individual channels from a multi-channel audio file in FCPX and assign the Roles to them, when importing into Logic, it still imports the interleaved file and does not split them.

the general audio import rule in Logic is, that it only imports interleaved files. There is one little details. This rules applied to multi-channel audio files that have a specific channel assignment. For example, Left-Right, 5.1, 6.1 etc. If the audio file, i.e. coming from a field recorder, multi-channel audio file without channel assignments (all mono), then Logic can split the file into its individual channels during import. However there are a lot of different procedures to pay attention to.

Here is an expert from my upcoming book "Logic Pro X - Tips, Trick, Secrets #2" about that messy topic of "interleaved-split" regarding the import of split files.

thank you so much Edgar. you are the only person who seems to know what i'm talking about. your book looks great. i want one soon as its for sale. in the book u talk about dragging into the bin and then into the timeline, what about if its a 90 minute feature XML. i have to relay on how it opens up to maintain sync. does that mean i would need to rebuild it? also. i found a work around. i treat it like a surround file and use the surround panner to select the relevant mic. so i made 4 track each panned to different positions. then routed each to a mono bus. so depending on what track you place the region on, it would select the assigned channel. its crazy that no one has written a little script that splits it all up neatly. thank you again for your replay. when does the book drop?

Hey!

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I'm having a similar problem importing multitrack wav files. If the file is more than 8 tracks, it puts all of them on individual tracks just fine, but if the file is 8 tracks, it sees it as a 7.1 file and does not behave the way your page from the book above says it should. I tried all of those methods and can't seem to separate the files.

Hey!

Thanks for replying! I have tried that, but it does not seem to open up the dialogue box like that .gif shows.

I am trying to hold the option key, select and drag the file into logic.

I also tried holding the option key while selecting the file from the import menu.

It keeps coming up as a 7.1 file. It's so odd that files with more than 8 tracks open just fine...
