Kernel Trap with 16 GB RAM Upgrade

My father purchased a mid 2010 27-inch iMac and I helped him order 16 GB of RAM for it. It calls for PC3-10600 RAM, so I purchased two Crucial brand 8 GB sticks. I took out the four 2 GB sticks that were in it, and replaced them with the two 8 GB sticks. Unfortunately, with the new RAM installed the iMac keeps restarting and getting kernel panics. Thinking I'd received bad RAM, I shipped it back for a new set, but the same thing is happening. I managed to copy the error report and email it to myself before the iMac crashed again. Any idea what the problem is? I've Googled for a solution, but haven't been able to find anything.

Greetings timsondrup,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you purchased two 8 GB RAM for your father’s 2010 27 inch iMac, but while starting up, you receive kernel panics. After looking at the Apple documentation, I see a potential for a few different issues that may be causing this situation.

Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support

First, according to the documentation in the article posted above, it looks like you may have purchased the incorrect RAM. The 2010 iMac calls for 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM.

Next, according to the documentation in the previous article, it is suggested that you use 2 GB or 4 GB SO-DIMMs in each slot, not the 8 GB that you currently have.

Maximum memory 16 GB
For the iMac (Late 2009) models, you can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot. For the iMac (Mid 2010) and iMac (Mid 2011) models, use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

Also, I see that the Mac will not start up if a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot. I would make sure both 8 GB SO-DIMMs are in the top slots before testing out 4 x 4 GB SO-DIMMs to achieve the maximum of 16 GB.

i5 and i7 Quad Core iMac computers come with both top memory slots populated. These computers will not start up if only a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot; these computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any top slot. Core Duo iMac computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any slot, top or bottom. ("Top" and "bottom" slots refer to the orientation of the slots in the pictures below. "Top" refers to the slots closest to the display; "bottom" refers to the slots closest to the stand.)

Have a great day!
