Why does the new earpods don't work on my ipod shuffle?

My original earpods are broken, well at least I cannot skip numbers on my ipod shuffle (the limited edition without buttons). So i bought the new earpods, but I couldn't turn the music louder or down. So I went to the Apple reseller in town but he said the new earpods aren't designed for ipod shuffle (at least the ones who are already old). So can anyone help me? I don't know what to do!
