iphone 6s lockscreen not locking

I bought a new iPhone 6s Plus last week. I set the lock screen to activate after 1 minute. This works only some of the time. On some occasions I access the phone 15 minutes after last using it, and go immediately to the home screen or into an app. Other times the lock screen works as intended. I have powered down and powered back up the phone. Any other suggestions?
