What does retired sim card mean?

My carrier recently told me that my sim card is "retired" and I need a new one. They mentioned that this means my sim card is obsolete and this is something that is done by the manufacturer. Is this normal? I have an iPhone 5 32GB that I am trying to switch back to my primary device.

iPhone 5, iOS 9.1

As stated in my previous response those are carrier feature, sim card has nothing to do with Apple or iPhone.

As stated by Allan, go talk to your carrier Verizon about it.

The SIMs that Verizon uses are, if I recall correctly, manufactured by a company called Gemalto. Verizon has used the same nano SIMs with iPhones since iPhones went to nano SIMs. Under what circumstance were you told that the SIM was "retired"? My reading of your original post is that you have some other phone and are switching to an iPhone 5. What is the phone you're currently using? If the phone you're currently using has a different size SIM, you would need a new one for your iPhone 5. So, maybe what you were being told was that Apple no longer uses micro SIMS and is using nano SIMs and you need a new one to activate the phone?

Verizon won't charge you for the SIM.
