Q: how do i connect to my time capsule using ethernet

I have lousy wifi from my router in the living room to my iMac in the office.  I initially had my Time Capsule colocated with the router and used it's network with the same results.   Then I went to a ZyXel WAP client in the office.  Still lousy speeds.  My current configuration has the time capsule in the office as the wifi client.  No improvement.  I get 88 down and 12 up in the living room with my MacBook today, but only a max of 20/12 in the office, sometimes as low as 4/6 on the iMac.

I want to try using ethernet to the TC, but can't figure out how to configure it.  When I tell Network diagnostics I want to connect using ethernet, it shows status all green except network settings, and says "your internet connection appears to be working correctly."  So I go to setup assistant, connect using LAN, and it wants IP address and Subnet mask, which I pull from Network preferences, but is still needs Router address.  In Network/Ethernet/TCP/IP, it wants a DHCP Client ID.  Where do I find this stuff--or is there an easier way?

looking at the back of the TC, from top to bottom, there are three ethernet jacks, a USB port, and another ethernet jack on the bottom. The jack on the bottom is connected to your modem. you're plugging in to one of the three on top, the the other end in the iMac.

System Preferences > Network should now look like this:

If you dont have that Ethernet Connected, click the little plus sign on the bottom left and select ethernet from the drop down.

if still having issues, try a restart

My screenshot shows both Ethernet and Wi-Fi with green status. Yours shows Wi-Fi with yellow status. Does that difference make a difference and if so, how to fix?

My guess is you are not using Airport Utility to connect. This is an app that is built into OS X, to launch it (or any other app) type Command + Spacbar and type the name of the app.

You many benefit by watching this Youtube video on how to use Airport Utility. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Jv6m43eIE
