Im sorry to hear your device ended up on recovery mode ( that's how is called when the connect to iTunes figure shows on screen)
Whenever this happens you may need to use a Windows based PC or Mac with the latest version of iTunes installed on it
the reason why is because once the device is on recovery there's no way back, you need to move forward and restore the software, wich will delete all data and take the iPhone back into factory settings
to know how to perform the whole process follow the KB article If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
make sure you have a backup to restore from before following this article, otherwise if you don't use your apple ID durning the setup and most of you data can be downloaded from iCloud
hope it helps!!!

If the phone is in recovery mode and the OP doesn't already have a back up, it's too late to make one.

Which is a back up. If the OP had not enabled the back up function in iCloud, it's too late.
