OS 10.8.5 on Mac Air
The security settings are preventing downloads of backgammon games.
The backgammon games in the App store have complaints.
Please recommend a good game and how or whether to add the bgblitz
(which is one of the programs being prevented)

From your question, it sounds like you are unable to download some apps from outside of the App Store because of Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper serves to help protect your Mac from apps that could adversely affect it.
That being said, you can change the Gatekeeper settings to allow downloads from everywhere if you choose. I would highly suggest reading over the entire article to help you make a more informed decision. The instructions for changing the Gatekeeper options are also included in the article if you would still like to do so.
