MacBook Pro wakes after sleep then immediately shuts down

Hi,

I have found several threads about similar problems but none that seem to actually say anything about how to solve the problem.

My mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro always shuts down (as in "click" no longer working, rather than enter a shut down procedure) withing a few seconds of being woken up after sleep. This ONLY seems to happen when on battery power so I replaced the battery but still happening. Please advise if there are any self help solutions or if I need to get professional help which is not easy where I live.

I lose data when this happens and it cannot be good for the system to shut down like that.

Thank you, in advance.

Simon

Hi S1monMar5h,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

If your MacBook Pro shuts down unexpectedly after waking from sleep, there are a number of steps I'd suggest.

You mentioned that you've looked at other threads, and I want to make sure you've tried the following:

First, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac, which is responsible for battery management among other low-level functions on Intel-based Macs.

If the issue reoccurs, start up in safe mode and test the issue there--OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode.

Since you mentioned it's not easy to get to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider in your area, you can also check your Hardware using Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test (depending on your Mac model)--OS X El Capitan: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test.

Feel free to let us know the results of these tests if the situation persists.

All the best.

If you ran a hardware test, did it reveal anything? I'm having what seems to be an identical problem, but I can't run the hardware test because of a broken ethernet port. Exact same system with the same battery replacement (fewer than 10 cycles). I've eliminated the hard drive, optical drive, and graphics card as a problem, although the problem seems to be more prevalent running the dedicated card. Shuts down after sleep cycles, shuts down while booting from both internal and external drives. Adding AC power to the mix seems to alleviate the issue significantly but I've still observed failures while on AC power.
