My Macbook Air is making a a strange "flying saucer" type sound every now and then. I'm not sure if it is a notification of some kind, but it's unusual for my mac. Does anyone know what it could be?

There are certain apps that make sounds. Skype may be one. Some Bluetooth devices like Beats headsets make a similar noise when they pair with your Mac.
LOL! No more like a swishing, whining sound. But now that I think about it. I think sound different messaging system opened up on my mac last night... hmmm. Off to find it!
Yes, messaging apps are another likely candidate. There are plenty. Check the apps in System Preferences > Notifications for which "Play sound for notifications" is selected also.
