Have you imported the document from another app (such as Excel?)

The spread sheet was created on Open Office software and save on a flash drive as (.xls) and the transferred to my Mac book Air. The dates show up like this instead of the normal date format. Not sure if I can do something to switch them back or if I need to save the spreadsheet in a different format.

Add the serial number to Apple's base date
Formula in C2 (and Fill Down)
=C$1+B2

Second thought. The document was created in Excel. Excel may have used 1900 as the base date.
